With the first new material since last year’s EP ‘VR Porn’ Nottingham based three-piece Marvin’s Revenge have found a new melodic side on a new single ‘Hugs From Grandma’.
There is still the big Marvin’s barrage of guitar sound, but there’s a “bouncy and upbeat” melodic pop hook at the heart, making it their biggest “anthem” to date. Not that they lose their dark edge as the lyrics delve into wrestling with depression and other afflictions.
‘Big Snake’ finds them settling into their songwriting comfort zone - a big, noisy, angsty mess. It revels in its juggernaut riffs and pummelling rhythmic pulse whilst telling the tale of a big snake roaming the streets eating people.
Finally ‘Eating Flowers’ illustrates the evolution of Marvin’s songwriting, finding a new sensitive side, which they have so far not given as much attention to. It retains its big guitar sound and their characteristic moodiness.
Their new music, their strongest collection to date, highlights another evolution of a band constantly honing their songwriting and identity, emerging now with a tighter but noisier, gnarlier sound. Their sound has hints of The Jesus Lizard grunge fuzz, Pixies’ dark melodies, Idles forthright delivery, the hardcore explorations of Fugazi and, additionally, psychedelic desert-rock, but this is more than a simple nostalgia trip.
Marvin’s Revenge is Luke Eaton (bass and vocals), Job Gregory (drums) and Oliver Sammels-Moore (Guitar), who formed in Wirksworth, Derbyshire and now operate out of Nottingham. They started 2023 by releasing their official debut EP, “Harry’s Redroom” which was quickly followed up with the critically acclaimed EP ‘VR Porn’ at the end of 2023.
Making a name as one of the most exciting new live alt-rock bands in the UK, headlining shows throughout 2024 in London, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool after building a name supporting the likes of noise punk greats JOHN, hardcore legends Fucked Up, and shoegaze heroes The Telescopes.
To celebrate the release of ‘Hugs from Grandma’ Marvin’s Revenge will tour the UK leading up to their largest headline show to date in Nottingham where they will hold an all-day event inviting their friends (and acts they admire) from the local scene to the stage - Splinter Group, Ideal Host, Wizards Can’t be Lawyers and Kez join them at Saltbox on 12th October.
